I am writing to let you know that Bill and I have moved to Bend, OR. Though we have talked about the move for the past two years, the actual decision on a house and the move itself happened quickly and suddenly we are gone. This is happy news, but one can’t open a door without closing others and I am sad that I will no longer be with you in the circle.

I’d hoped to write something beautiful or clever but what does one do when communicating to a group of talented people like you? If only I could write something that Bob could accompany with his harmonica. Bill could write a beautiful poem about my move and Cindy could illustrate it while she told the story so nicely. Barb could write about how God is in the mountain I see out my window now and Tim could put a story to music on his guitar. And Mary, she could strum her harp as we travel away yet it would be the music of her voice and the magic of her stories that would warm our hearts and make us aware of our connection with one another.

So I will simply tell you that it has meant much to me to be a part of your circle. I greatly enjoyed hearing your music, your poetry, your stories and the sharing of your lives with one another. Your encouragement has meant the difference to me of telling only one story on a Sunday night and now telling stories whenever I have the chance.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I will miss our gathering but know that I will hear news of marvelous things happening
when you are together.

It is my wish that we will meet again.

Until then – peace,

Beverly Allen

Review of the Singer-Songwriter Showcase at the Thumbnail Theater
September 17th, 2011 with Beth Whitney, Bill Davie, J.W.McCLure and Tim Noah

The Thumbnail Theater – Snoho-town’s ‘cozy home for the performing arts’- launched the first of their quarterly Songwriter Showcase Concerts on Saturday night, September 17, 2011 featuring PNW singer-songwriters Beth Whitney, Bill Davie, J.W. McClure and the Thumb’s own, Tim Noah. The theater’s spacious stage with its all-pro sound and lighting equipment comfortably seated the songwriters in a gentle arc facing the audience where each could be heard and seen with intimate clarity.

J.W. Mc Clure had the additional duty of MC for the evening poking gentle fun where needed and keeping the songs moving with his smart sense of timing and humor as the performers took turns presenting their original compositions, insights and asides. The night’s songs were an amazing study in diverse creative approaches, styles, vocal ranges and subject matter.

With Beth Whitney representing the ‘twenty-something’ take on the world – the audience was treated to highly creative lyrics and accomplished pared-down guitar lines with Beth’s pure, intimate & powerful vocals. Her on-stage persona was original, fresh and disarming. Beth has a beautiful and unique sounding voice that she combines to great effect with her evocative, poetic lyrics.

Singer-songwriter, Bill Davie, delivered his incredibly energetic and intense lyrics, guitar picking style and vocalizations with consummate professionalism. An extremely facile and powerful guitar player, Davie’s songs were like whirlwinds – capturing and propelling the listener down the alley-ways of his wildly original story-lines. Bill’s showmanship is effortless, and captivating.

Tim Noah, whom I had known through his award winning work as an entertainer and songwriter with children’s programs, took me by complete surprise with his beautifully crafted and delivered adult contemporary songwriting work. Tim is a naturally gifted performer on stage, relaxed, engaging and incredibly polished. His voice is warm and powerful and his songs were melodically fascinating and superbly performed.

As his singer-songwriter self, J.W. McClure delivered a fine batch of original songs with a Jimmy Rogers yodel thrown in for extra measure. Whether comedic, politically pointed or deeply human – J.W,’s songs go straight to the listener’s funny bone, heart and soul. With his easy going manner, effortless old time guitar playing and low key but hilarious stage presence he doesn’t exactly let on where he is taking you until the song is over and you realize he has perfectly captured human frailty via a song about a lonesome cowboy sitting at his campfire, scared and hearing things – possibly space aliens. The audience was all ears and enjoyed the ride immensely.

A great evening of entertainment with a fine group of singer-songwriters!

Thumbnail Theater History

In the spring of 2002, in the town of Snohomish WA, Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater “a cozy home for the performing arts” was born. Co-founded by Emmy award winning songwriter and producer, Tim Noah and Cyndi Elliott, MA, arts in education, the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater found it’s home in a historic, 100 year old church. Responding to an obvious need in the community and with the permission and support of the congregation, Tim and Cyndi began by offering private lessons in voice, guitar and piano and classes in musical theater. With the help of volunteers, a stage was constructed in the main sanctuary. Soon, sound and lighting were added and performances, open mics and recitals by and for members of the local community began. In 2005, Thumbnail Theater was granted it’s official 501c3 status by the Federal Government. In 2007 Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater bought the building from the church. With nine active board members and ever-increasing support from local citizens, businesses, corporations and civic groups, Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater now offers a weekly open mic, a monthly jazz jam, three monthly children’s performances-The Imagine Inn, a monthly storytelling circle, Second Sunday Song Srycle, weekly Israeli Folk Dance, and ongoing private music lessons in voice, piano and guitar as well as classes in musical theater, movement and acting. We present annual holiday performances, our own homegrown radio style variety shows and frequent high-quality performances from professional touring artists. Your support of Thumbnail Theater is always appreciated. If you value the arts, please join us soon.

All,

To all the Talented Musicians, to the Idea People, to the Family of (Wo)Mankind, represented by each and every one of you…
To the Sideboards Man, to the Roadies. To Shagay, who is always there when you need anything!

To J.W. for the announcements, pronouncements, renouncements, ( the deep end was gone, long live the deep end!)…

I could go on longer than ThumbStock lasted! And I assure you it is still happening in my heart! To the Brotherhood and Sisterhood and Friendship and Family. To the decorations, to the cozy home.

(To those who started the Theater before my consciousness expanded to include it, lo those 4 blocks seem so short today, but unaware, they seem so far away at the time before I knew ye!)

I wasn’t at WoodStock, my friends, but I was at the Human Be-In <Human Be-In – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia>. Golden Gate Park, January 14, 1967. I was at the first “Lighter-Than_Air_Fair on August 30,1968! <Sky River Rock Festival and Lighter Than Air Fair opens a three …>, here in Washington. (Ever see a piano drop onto a woodpile from a helicopter?) I’ve been to a lot of big-time concerts. ThumbStock was beyond doubt, the funnest; the finest of them all, for me, personally. Each song evoked memories of my youth, (a few years ago!)! Each performer at ThumbStock was so professional, so together, but they showed how much they were enjoying themselves at the same time, just incredible! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I’m not a musician, so I content myself to being an artful audience member. And nobody could ask for a more wondrous Rock Concert! That was IT! Every so often, a rift comes into my head from that night, and I start swaying! So, I’m your fan, your groupie!

The only way I think I could be happier is, if I knew there would be a ThumbStock 2012! ??? What do you think? Will it be an annual event? Snohomish, (heck, the WORLD!), doesn’t even know what it’s missing! Let’s give them another chance next year!
But if not, I’ll always have August 13, 2011!

Thank you! Thanks, and thanks again!

Still feelin’ the Love,
Dancin’ Dobe Doinat

Dear Friends ~

Thanks to all who contributed to one of our most successful and satisfying fundraising events to date. Thumbstock 2011 was a milestone. Never have we had so much willing and enthusiastic participation. On stage and behind the scenes, you rocked the house! And the house was packed. Last night there were 90 + patrons in the pews and happily spilling out on to the front porch, enthusiastic heartfelt applause for one great performance after another, hilarious comedic touches, basil brownies, community spirit and a spontaneous standing “O” for the finale. After the aisle dancing dust settled we discovered over a thousand $ in the coffers for our “cozy home for the performing arts.”

Now, that’s one fine fundraising event!

Thanks for Giving the Thumb A Hand! We’d love to hear your thoughts.

~ Tim and Cyndi

With the kind help of many volunteers, Snohomish’s ”cozy home for the performing arts” is still here. Our Open Mic’s every Friday night host a wide variety of performers of all ages. On any given Friday night you’ll find singers, song writers, story tellers, poets and more. We have an active and investing group of volunteers that keep this event staffed. Many thanks go to Cindy Ainsley for coordinating the Friday night Open Mic. Sign up starts around 6:30p.m. and runs until 7:20p.m. when we draw lots to create the performance order for the evening. If you arrive after 7:20p.m. you are welcome to sign up to perform but you will be placed at the end of the list. Sorry. We try to end our evening by about 11:00p.m. to be neighborly.

Kind and generous volunteers have helped us upgrade this 100+ year old facility with improvements to our lighting, heat/air flow, painting, security, gardening and much more. We are a 501c3 which means we are a non-profit organization and your donation dollars can by deducted on your income taxes. Many businesses such as Boeing and Microsoft offer matching funds so if your company might do the same that can be a win win for all.

We are “YOUR” home for the performing arts and need “YOUR” help. Come join us through donating, volunteering, performing, and/or spreading the word.
